Audie Awards

The Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement are awarded annually by the Horror Writers Association, a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting the interests of writers of horror and dark fantasy.

This award was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Coretta Scott King Award
The Coretta King Scott award is given annually to authors of African descent whose distinguished books promote understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream." This award commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his widow, Coretta Scott King, for her courage in continuing his work for peace and brotherhood.

Edgar Awards

The Man Booker Prize was founded in 1969 by Booker McConnell, a multinational conglomerate company. Administered by Book Trust in the United Kingdom, this prestigious award is given to the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the U.K., the Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.

Michael L. Printz Award for Teen Literature
The Michael L. Printz Award, first given in 2000, is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. The honor was named for a Topeka, Kansas, school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

National Book Award
The National Book Awards were established in 1950 by a consortium of publishing groups who wanted to bring to the public's attention exceptional books written by Americans, as well as encourage reading in general. Today, the awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature.

National Book Critics Circle Awards
The National Book Critics Circle consists of more than 700 book reviewers. Since its founding in 1974, the NBCC's centerpiece has been annual awards for the best book in five categories: fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry, and criticism. In addition, each year the NBCC awards the Ivan Sandrof Award for Contribution to American Arts and Letters and salutes one member of the Circle with the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing.

National Jewish Book Award
The National Jewish Book Awards are given by the Jewish Book Council. They are presented to North American or Israeli authors to honor excellence, either for a book or for a lifetime of achievement. One of the oldest awards programs in the field of Jewish literature, the awards are designed to heighten awareness of books that have appeal to a wide audience.

Newbery Award
The Newbery award is given by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. The award has been given annually since 1922. It is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Scott O'Dell Award
The annual Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction goes to a meritorious book published in the previous year for children or young adults. Scott O'Dell established this award in 1982, to encourage other writers--particularly new authors--to focus on historical fiction. He hoped in this way to increase the interest of young readers in the historical background that has helped to shape their country and their world.
