The World's Best Hotels has its roots in a 1980 Institutional Investor conference in the south of France, where an after-dinner conversation of a group of financial executives turned into an animated discussion of their favorite hotels. The results of this ad hoc poll, scribbled down on napkins over a dinner between friends, gave rise to the very first Institutional Investor survey of the world's best hotels. Ever since then, the magazine's annual ranking of hotels, polled from its worldwide subscription base, has been an eagerly anticipated event each September. The results of the most recent survey are showcased in The World's Best Hotels 2008/09, a fitting tribute to those palaces of comfort that go the extra mile to make every single guest feel right at home.
