Arnie Goldman and Redso Wolff, an unlikely duo at best, have been on-again/off-again friends since high school. Arnie, who at twenty-five has established himself internationally as a prominent rock and gem dealer, is crippled by rheumatoid arthritis and depends on a pair of aluminum crutches for mobility. Intense, frenetic Redso is a brilliant but unstable aspiring playwright whose wild lifestyle takes him to rocky extremes. When Redso unexpectedly reenters Arnie's life, he brings with him sensuous, earthy Billy Rubin, who, until recently, has led a sheltered life controlled by her eccentric rabbi father. But Redso is deteriorating mentally, and as e becomes more and more manic, Arnie struggles to suppress his almost comic yearning for Billy - setting up a love triangle of obsession and lust. Ultimately, Billy is forced to choose between the two men, each needy in his own way - one physically impaired, the other emotionally out of control.
